Good coffee is about more than the beans. The ritual around it shapes how you experience every cup. Here are five small habits that make a big difference.
1. Grind fresh, every time
Pre-ground coffee starts losing flavour within minutes of grinding. Invest in a burr grinder and grind just before brewing. The aroma alone is worth it.
2. Use filtered water
Coffee is 98% water. If your tap water tastes off, your coffee will too. A simple filter jug makes a noticeable difference.
3. Get the temperature right
Water that's too hot (above 96°C) extracts bitter compounds. Let boiled water rest for 30 seconds before pouring, or use a variable-temperature kettle set to 92–94°C.
4. Measure, don't guess
The classic ratio is 60g of coffee per litre of water. A kitchen scale removes guesswork and helps you replicate the cup you loved.
5. Clean your equipment
Old coffee oils are bitter. Rinse your cafetière, AeroPress, or moka pot after every use and deep-clean weekly. You'll taste the difference immediately.
